Texture detectives
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a sensory-rich lesson focused on using paint to explore and recreate texture. Children begin by becoming ‘texture detectives’ on a walk to observe and collect textured objects or surfaces. Back in the classroom, they experiment with applying paint in different ways using a variety of tools—such as sponges, forks, combs and foil—to mimic the textures they observed.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. It helps teachers feel confident guiding learners in creative exploration while building vocabulary, observation and fine motor skills. As part of the Painting and mixed media: Life in colour unit, this lesson encourages children to investigate how texture and colour can work together, laying the groundwork for expressive collage-making later in the unit.
