Exploring texture through paint
This Art and design video supports teachers in delivering a sensory-rich lesson focused on using paint to explore and recreate texture. Learners begin by becoming ‘texture detectives’ on a walk to observe and collect textured objects or surfaces. Back in the classroom, they experiment with applying paint in different ways using a variety of tools, such as sponges, forks, combs and foil, to mimic the textures they observed.
This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design Curriculum Framework (0067). It helps teachers feel confident guiding learners in creative exploration while building vocabulary, observation and fine motor skills. As part of the Painting and mixed media: Life in colour unit, this lesson encourages children to investigate how texture and colour can work together, laying the groundwork for expressive collage-making later in the unit.
