Tints and shades

This Art and design video introduces learners to the concepts of tints and shades by guiding them through the process of mixing paint with black and white. Learners select a starting colour and explore how adding white creates lighter tints, while adding black produces darker shades. They apply their paint to sketchbook pages, gradually adjusting the tone to develop a wider colour range and begin to understand how these changes can affect mood, depth, and form.

This video is part of Kapow’s Art and design resources, which support the Cambridge Primary Art & Design framework. As part of the Light and dark unit, this lesson helps children develop confidence in colour mixing and lays the groundwork for more complex tonal work later in the unit.
